[JDPUB: 57] PRESS RELEASE: WARM HEART by MICHAEL C. WOOD

AFRICA AID EXPERT TURNS AUTHOR

Just Done Productions - Publishing has just published the gripping novel, Warm Heart by Michael C. Wood

Warm Heart - A Story of Corruption, Aid and Treachery in Africa is set in the Southern African Republic of Zungula, a poor nation emerging from the traumas of dictatorship. Its President pays scant attention to promised democratic freedoms or improved governance. Instead, he and his cronies set out to enrich themselves while the rest of the nation suffers chronic food shortage. In the predominantly Muslim north, brutal tribal conflict and a meningitis epidemic have devastating effects. But neither event registers on Western radars until the damage is done. Maintaining only a charade of concern for his people, the President is preoccupied with alterations to his luxurious palace accommodation, to profiting from the international sale of limited grain reserves, and to securing a third term of office, contrary to provisions in the naissant Constitution.

A newly appointed British High Commissioner is ill-prepared for the diplomatic challenges which confront him. He is out manoeuvred by the President at every turn, and retreats behind preparations for the annual ritual of the Queen’s Birthday Party (which ends in hilarious farce). It is left to his tenacious and gritty aid lieutenant, together with a rising star of the President’s otherwise corrupt administration, to find solutions to the crises which have befallen the country.

This novel is a vivid account of an African country in steep decline. There is hunger, corruption, butchery, political shenanigans, and overwhelming poverty. The story brings to life a gallery of unforgettable characters, black and white, rich and poor, powerful and weak, corrupt and honest. Warm Heart has a strong political and human message.

Peter Hinchcliffe, Editor of the Open Writing Web Magazine describes the novel as ‘enthralling and disturbing, with brilliant plotting and characterisation, leaving the reader longing to know what happens next,’ and adds, ‘it is packed with excitement, humour and atmosphere.’

Before taking up full time writing, Michael Wood was an international aid expert whose experience spanned much of Africa, the former Soviet Union states, and the Caribbean. He managed the UK’s £70 million annual aid budget in Malawi until 2003 and was also employed by the World Bank in Washington DC.
