[JDPUB: 112] NEW BOOK: Apartheid's Other Back Yard by Martin R. Fisher

Apartheid’s Other Back Yard by Martin R. Fisher has just been published by Just Done Productions

FICTION BASED ON FACT: R170

Matthew, born with a dark skin into a white family, struggles to find some foothold within a society that was rapidly becoming polarised. Together with his family he encounters the divisive intrusion of racial classification. He finds his world divided without a point of reference for his own questionable identity. Matthew’s life is irrevocably altered, when in 1948, the Nationalist government decided to begin the process of separating out different race groups based on their racial heritage.

Matthew’s story uncovers a new perspective of the mostly forgotten and unseen effects of separate development. When we consider the scale of the suffering imposed by apartheid, we are tempted to consider numbers as the determining factor as to the worth of consideration. This story reveals the broader and mostly hidden extent of the effects of racial segregation.

The narrative captures the essence of those challenges faced by a family whose personal and social trials, to all intents and purposes, went unnoticed. It takes place in society’s backyard. It is a place which is mostly unseen, hidden from the general view, a place where unused items are abandoned, often forgotten about... Matthew’s story is about the less obvious effects of separate development. It was indeed Apartheid’s other backyard.

Martin Fisher was educated at schools in Gauteng. He qualified as a teacher and taught in different schools in Gauteng and the Western Cape. He later graduated with a PhD and went on to become a lecturer. In 1992 he started his own development consultancy with a focus on Management and Organisational Development, the success of which he continues to enjoy.
