[JDPUB: 68] AN ELEPHANT BLOODLINE by Howard Blight now available

An Elephant Bloodline by Howard Blight can now be bought on the Just Done website  R150

An Elephant Bloodline records the way elephants are born, communicate with and care for each other. Taken from real life experiences, the book records incidents of a puff adder bite, broken limbs and a broken back, as well as death by predators and near-death from thirst. In other words, it narrates the full spectrum of happenings in the natural world that may impact on elephant families.

‘Two elephant-calf half-sisters are separated in the waters of a flooded river after members of their family are gunned down by Shadrach, the legendary hunter and poacher. Over the years they rise through the ranks, eventually each becoming matriarchs of their own herds. They wander through The Kruger National Park, observing the effect of the increasing elephant population on biodiversity, or ecological stability. As adults they eventually meet one another again, under extraordinary circumstances.’

There are presently more elephants on the sub-continent than there have ever been. How does their method of bulk feeding impact on biodiversity as a whole?

In 2003, a group of five sub-adult bulls broke out from the Kruger Park into the Balule Game Reserve and finally into the commercial farming district near Hoedspruit in Limpopo Province, South Africa. Because the animals were threatened with being shot by nature conservation officers, the elephant taming and training company EFAF (Elephants for Africa Forever) was called in. World-renowned 'elephant whisperers’, Rory and Lindie Hensman, translocated four of the five named characters in An Elephant Bloodline to the EFAF facilities in Limpopo Province. The fifth, Knobnose has been destroyed by the authorities.

When Howard set out to trace the fortunes of the elephants he knew, his research and experiences incorporated other stories - of ancient wilderness rites, of the management of South Africa's wild places, and of the future of biodiversity. This, is that story….

To remark that elephants simply never forget sell them short.

Recent research suggests a lot more, and Howard Blight’s captivating new book offers a picture in which humans and elephants share a kind of real intelligence.” Lyall Watson

Author of SUPERNATURE and ELEPHANTOMS

Mr. Blight has written a book that gives us much to think about. It deserves serious reading.

Dr. Ian Player

Naturalist and conservationist

'Howard Blight weaves together the symbiotic worlds inhabited by elephants and Africans. One is left sure in the knowledge that these great beasts with silent footsteps ultimately demand of us that which we so reluctantly give – our own humanity. Fascinating.'

John van de Ruit

Author of Spud

An Elephant Bloodline will transport you into the realistic world of Africa today, it has a good educational side to it and is a fabulous easy read for anyone who loves Elephants, Animals, Africa and its people''

Vicky Brooker

Animal action

"A beautiful tapestry created from the marriage of myth and fact, transporting
the reader into the intimate life a group of elephants. A well paced read which holds the
interest of the reader. A book that could make a valuable contribution to the curriculum of
Senior school learners
."
  Cecilia Knox
Animal Welfarist

The writer cleverly combines his profound knowledge of the African elephant, the African bush, and the people of Africa with the dire necessity for future generations to understand the reason for practical, unemotional, and long-term sustainable conservation of all our flora and fauna in a balanced eco-system in today's rapidly changing Africa.”

Rory Hensman

African Elephant Whisperer

Howard Blight studied at the Royal Agricultural College, Cirencester, and was appointed in 1991 as a Wildlife Consultant in Zimbabwe. In 2003, he co-founded Elephants for Africa Forever (EFAF), which tames and trains wild African elephants that would otherwise be culled, by using the bilateral ‘ask-and-reward’ principle. He lives in Tzaneen, Limpopo, South Africa.

[JDPUB: 65] Press Release: NEVER GO TREKKING - PENELOPE VAN MAASDYK

Never go trekking and other stories by Penelope van Maasdyk has just been published by Just Done Productions – Publishing R190

My book is about how, after living in London for four years, I traded Prada for Karrimor to go backpacking for seven months. I found karma in Nepal, bang lassis in India, a monumental language barrier in China, paradise ... eventually ... in Vietnam, bedbugs in Australia, and a longing for home in South Africa. Your Prada shoes might find comfort under the bright city streetlights and your hiking boots can leave footprints all over the world ... only to find that your feet will find the path that will inevitably lead you back home”  Penelope  van Maasdyk

The theme will capture the hearts of travellers the world over, as well as women who have always felt more comfortable behind a mask of designer labels ... those who will either want to substitute the grime for a bit of armchair travel, or use it as a prompt to live it themselves ... and people who would far rather watch The Amazing Race than ever consider actually entering it.

Penelope has always had a passion for writing and travel … she just always assumed the writing would lead to gainful employment and the travel would involve Louis Vuitton luggage and a custom-bought wardrobe. Instead, she found herself in London’s financial district pushing paper and crunching numbers … and loving every moment of the capitalist pleasures it brought.

But, after four years of hard work and over-indulgence, her Jesus Lopez shoes held no more promise of adventure in the world’s most exciting capital. Canary Wharf lost its lustre and ‘Person under the train’ announced on the Underground intercom, filled her more with contempt than compassion. It was time to pack up and leave the Big Smoke. Time to pack away the Kurt Geiger satin slippers and the Karen Millen ball gown and scour London for the most state-of-the-art hiking boots and nasty nylon travel gear. Time for a serious change in comfort zone. Time to backpack around Southeast Asia … on a budget!

Never go trekking … and other stories, was born of this journey. A journey both physical and emotional, it provided a jolt as unsettling as it was liberating and a life-changing experience for everyone to draw from. Drink it in with pure envy or horror and vow to live it or leave it.

After a further three years in London, Penelope has shunned the investment world and is now living back in South Africa, finding more soul in editing, writing, photography and that often-soulless job of being a mum. There are currently no major travel plans on the horizon as the journey of life can often be enough.

The book has an appendix with hints on shopping, packing, budget, travel and hotels.

353 pages text printed on Reviva, 10 pages black and white photographs, 12 pages of colour photographs

[JDPUB: 64] PRESS RELEASE: CAPE BOJADOR-The Gateway to Hell - ED TILSTON

Cape BojadorThe Gateway to Hell by Ed Tilston has been published by Just Done Productions Publishing R160

Mario Freitas, a young Portuguese mariner, is in love with Elena, his captain’s daughter. His ship is captured by Barbary pirates, his captain killed. The same pirates capture the beautiful young Countess of Zaragossa. They are both stripped and sold on the slave block in Ceuta. They are bought by the Emir of Meknes with whom the Countess eventually falls in love.

Mario spends his years as a slave roaming the deserts with the camel caravans. He learns the secrets of navigation by the stars. He is condemned to be crucified but is saved when the Portuguese capture Ceuta in 1415. He returns to Portugal to search for Elena. Under Prince Henry the Navigator he establishes the world-famous Navigation School at Sagres where mariners can, at last, learn how to navigate the open ocean using the stars.

He directs the attempts to conquer Bojador, the Gateway to Hell, the Evil Cape, where the early mariner believed sea monsters lurked, where giant lodestones would draw the nails from his ship and where he would be borne by the waters cascading over the edge of the flat earth to tumble forever in the void.

A wondrous tale, based on early fifteenth century historical fact, of adventure, seamanship, love, slavery, torture, and the life and beliefs of a man who lives to compare the freedom of his slavery with the bondage of his liberty.

An excerpt:

His heart pounding, Mario scrambled up onto the taffrail and grabbed a stay. He stared in horror at the rapidly approaching galley. Its double bank of oars rose and dipped to the rhythm of a great drum pounding somewhere in the galley’s depths, the wet blades flashing in the early sunlight….

The galley surged closer. The sweat trickled cold down his back. There was nothing he could do but stare helplessly. He had heard harrowing tales from other mariners. He knew that behind its gunwales the pirates would be crouching: turbaned Berbers gripping drawn swords; black-veiled Tuaregs clutching round shields and scimitars; cowled Riffs hefting long lances. He could see two burly overseers cracking their long black whips across the backs of the slaves at the sweeps.

He shook his head in disbelief but continued to watch, fascinated by the hypnotic sweep of the oars moving to the ever-increasing booming of the drum. Vivid scenes flashed through his mind: Elena standing in her parents’ garden, almond blossoms falling about her feet; the cadence of his mother’s nursery rhymes mingling with the beat of the drum; his teenage memory of the 1385 battle against the Castilians from which he had so miraculously escaped. Nine years since that battle! His heart sank; has it all come to this, then?

The galley knifed through the water sending a smooth bow wave rippling back along its flank to distort the reflection of its black and gold hull. It loomed closer, filling the middle distance, close enough for the pounding of the great drum to resound in the Santa Inez’s own timbers and vibrate in Mario’s very bones.

Captain da Silva stood on the quarterdeck. His navy blue tunic open to a bare gray-haired chest, his narrowed eyes fixed on the onrushing galley as it began to turn in a wide circle to ram the Santa Inez amidships. Mario saw him half draw his sword, and then slam it back into its scabbard and race to the helmsman’s side. The galley finished its wide turn and headed directly for the cog….”

G. Edwin Tilston was born and educated in England. He served as pilot in the RAF and RN. He acted as agent for ships in the deep-sea and coastwise trades in Brazil, Peru (where he also served as honorary British Consul), Trinidad, New Orleans and New York. An American citizen, he now lives with his wife, Elizabeth Ellen Churchill, in the beautiful North Carolina Mountains.
