[JDPUB: 170] NEW BOOK: TO HONOUR - Patricia Hamilton

announces the publication of To Honour by Patricia Hamilton R140

Described as “Scotland’s own “Saving Private Ryan” of World War 1, this is a moving account of a Scottish family caught up in what was then called the Great War of 1914-1918. Based on fact, it is a story never told before. At a time when the world is looking back, one hundred years later, at some of the worst battles, and re-living memories of the Great War, this story reveals the consequences for one family caught up in its tragic events.

In 2010, the National Archives of Scotland, (now called the National Records of Scotland), released details of the thousands of applicants who appeared before the Lothian and Peebles Military Appeal Tribunal against service overseas. Frank Hamilton Cowie’s case was one of them, and considered by the 2010 National Records Office to be so extraordinary that an internet appeal was established, to find out what happened to Frank Cowie. This small book carries the answer. Written by two of his descendants, the authors have re-created the family’s history between the years 1914-1918, and the events which shaped so many lives.

The narrative covers soldiers, their regiments, the battles they fought in 1915, Bethune, Loos and the Gallipoli campaign. Regiments involved are The Queen’s own Cameron Highlanders, the Nelson Battalion, RN, and the Glasgow Highlanders. The book records not only the horror of trench warfare, but what it was also like back home. It will appeal not only to those who have fought in wars, but the mothers, wives, sweethearts, who waited and hoped for their return.

This story also reveals how Frank Hamilton Cowie’s eventual move to South Africa impacted on his descendants’ lives. The book has a section at the back briefly illustrating how, his descendants have been involved, and still are, in South Africa’s fabric. From anti-apartheid apartheid activists to the family business, which remains, but is now involved, not only in marketing, but manufacturing of the traditional cloth, Shweshwe to engineering, to IT, education and law, and in many other spheres, his descendants form part of the SA community.
