[JDPUB: 88] The Great Alarm Clock Robbery - Peter Frow

THE GREAT ALARM CLOCK ROBBERY by Peter Frow is now available from Just Done R85

"This is a children's book in that it can be read with enjoyment by eight year olds and upwards while children as young as four will enjoy having it read to them. Yet adults also find it a compelling read. Many report, "I couldn't put it down, I had to read to the very finish in one go."

Pip stays with his guardian Edna who is housekeeper to Professor Ferdinand Philpott. Together with Jeremy the cat, they live in the house with three chimneys just three miles from the village of Honeydew. The Professor spends his time inventing things. His favourite inventions are those made from alarm clocks and string. Then there is Forbes the village undertaker and his sour-faced wife not to mention Edna’s fourteen friends and the Reverend Lovejoy. All these have a part in the events that lead to a dramatic and mysterious climax on the night of the robbery. Pip has a key to the role in solving the mystery. This is a story where kindness triumphs over meanness, and romance and happiness are the reward of the steadfast. There are many surprises; even Jeremy the cat springs a surprise.

More than the ‘whodunit’ factor, it is the unique and memorable characters and the way they interact that sustain the interest in the story. The tale is told with quiet humour, yet there is plenty of suspense and not a little pathos.

Romance there is in abundance: the book could have been subtitled "Three weddings and a funeral."

In no way can this book be considered bland or superficial: it deals with issues of life and death, courage and cruelty, grief and happiness not to mention, forgiveness, restoration, romance and marriage. All these though deftly woven into the storyline are handled in a straightforward and sensitive fashion that will help shape a child's, and for that matter an adult's, understanding and attitude towards these issues in a positive way.

The book contains some seventy illustrations by Gail Gillings.

About the Author

Peter Frow was born in Pietermaritzburg in 1944 and spent the first four years of his life in Colenso in the Natal Midlands. The family then moved to Durban. Peter matriculated from Westville High School (at that time a co-ed school) in 1961 and went on to study Mechanical Engineering at Natal University, Durban. Having completed his degree in 1965, he worked for ESKOM, the South African electricity supply authority, for seven years, attaining the position of Senior Engineer. Having joined the family engineering business, Peter entered the field of production machining and today runs his own business which manufactures production lathes to his own design.

During a seven year interlude from engineering he completed a theology degree through the University of South Africa. Writing, which he describes as ‘not his day job’ began some time around 1980 with the odd poem and short story."

THE GREAT ALARM CLOCK ROBBERY is a book that will delight readers, young and old. I read it in one sitting, and am looking forward to reading it again. Peter has hit just the right note in this story, aimed mainly at children – not too simple and not too sophisticated – and he doesn’t shy away from adult issues either, such as death, greed and re-marriage.

The tale is full of highly unusual, but believable, characters, who unwittingly become entangled in some hair-raising adventures, involving robbery, secrets and alarm clocks. This book, with its amusing illustrations, is guaranteed to keep children of all ages enthralled, and calling for more.

[JDPUB: 87] Blueprints in Black and White: The Built Environment Professions in South Africa - an Outline History by John Bizzell

Blueprints in Black and White: The Built Environment Professions in South Africa – an Outline History by John Bizzell is now available from Just Done  R125.00

An illustrated history of the professions, particularly architecture, culminating in statements about the challenges of the present from the leading contemporary practitioners. Commissioned by the Department of Public Works.

Summary: Starting with indigenous African architecture, follows the history of architecture, building, engineering, town planning etc through the various stages of South African history, up to the apartheid era and that following. A history of architecture, engineering, town planning etc in South Africa, from the earliest records to the present day.

The South African building professions are facing multi-faceted change:

* change in the legislation which governs their work

* in the kinds of work  now before them

* in their professional associations

* in technology choices

* in helping to heal the damage done by the South African

   past

Blueprints examines the process of change from South Africa's earliest beginnings. It looks at the various forces that moulded the built environment we have inherited and outlines the history of the professions, their associations and their training programmes. It records achievements both great and questionable, a story sometimes quirky and humorous, sometimes tragic, peopled by many extraordinary, larger-than-life personalities.

The author has interviewed experts and practitioners from many different fields: engineers, architects, planners, large and small-scale builders. Their daily encounters with new problems bring new insights, as the interviews explore the challenges ahead.

*

The built environment professions have always been in the thick of history, often acting as a litmus of social change. This is a book for anyone interested in South African history, and essential reading for anyone interested in the country's future.

Author’s biography:

After graduating from the University of Natal in 1961 John Bizzell helped Hans Hallen get his ground-breaking architectural practice in Durban under way (he was his first employee), and later opened his own short-lived Johannesburg partnership, BAKR, which he had to abandon in the post-Rivonia turbulence. He and his wife Maggie were forced into exile and lived in Canada, where he read for his Masters in Urban Design at the University of Toronto under Jack Diamond. Later he helped Diamond start his prestigious Toronto-based practice, and headed the research team under him on the seminal 1970 study, "Housing: Density, Distribution and Costs", funded by Canada's Central Mortgage and Housing Corporation. After 1994 they returned to South Africa to work mainly on rural based projects, John in construction and Maggie in education. He currently practises as an architect and project manager near Durban.

[JDPUB: 86] 2 books added: REALLY INSIDE BOSS by Piet Swanepoel AND MOKORO - A CRY FOR HELP by Mike Hoare

START BUYING YOUR CHRISTMAS GIFTS NOW SO THAT YOUR BOOKS CAN BE DELIVERED IN TIME!

MOKORO – A CRY FOR HELP by Mike Hoare R120 and
REALLY INSIDE BOSS
by Piet Swanepoel R160 - now available from Just Done

"Mad Mike" Hoare, the famous mercenary leader and adventurer, has just published his sixth book. It is a true account of his search for the Lost City of the Kalahari, and of a disaster in a remote part of the Okavango Delta.

In the 1950s, the story of the Lost City of the Kalahari gripped the public imagination. People organised expeditions to look for the lost city; even Alan Paton, the famous novelist, went searching. In the first part of the book, Mike tells of his solo trip in 1958 across the Kalahari Desert, his search for the lost city, his visit to the Tsodilo Hills, and a chance meeting with a crocodile hunter that changed the course of his life.

In the second part, he describes how, in 1963, he and his young wife decide to "drop out" for a year and live deep in the heart of the Okavango Delta. At first, their existence in this water wonderland is idyllic; then disaster strikes. Mike tells how he managed to overcome the obstacles, how then men started dying, and how he ultimately was trapped without any way of escaping. He was reduced to nothing. There was only one thing left to do: pray.

Chris Hoare

 ±A5 in size, paperback

104 pages including 18 photos

"During the course of our stay in the game reserve I took the opportunity to ask the PM some searching questions. What I wanted to find out was what actually happened in a meeting of the cabinet... Mr Vorster preferred to answer my question with a description of what happened in cabinet meetings when Dr Verwoerd was PM... "

P.C. "Piet" Swanepoel was transferred to the Special Branch of the South African Police in January 1952. He was to spend the next 32 years as a full time member of South Africa's Security and intelligence Services. (BOSS)

He describes the origins of the Service, the mystery surrounding the financing of the first attempts to launch an armed struggle against the National Party government, the controversial accounts of the Smit murders and the assassination of Dr Verwoerd, the role played by the CIA in the battle against apartheid and numerous other subjects.

"This book is a welcome addition to the literature on the murky battle between security agents and liberation movements. For far too long the allegations against BOSS and its successor have been uncritically accepted. For the first time we have someone from the inside of BOSS telling his story from his side's perspective."

[JDPUB: /] new books: The Sonny side of life

The Sonny side of Life by Hazel Lodetti (Evans) is now available on the Just Done site.

"This story is in honour of Sonny Evans, a great man and inventor who, amongst many other attributes, had a huge impact on the sugar and timber industry in Kwazulu Natal, South Africa (incorporating Zululand and Swaziland from the early 50’s to mid 80’s) Many of his inventions were designed to revolutionize the in-field handling of sugarcane and timber and, in 1984, he was honoured by the Minister of Trade and Commerce..

He was also a great lover of the sea and one of the pioneering ski-boat fishermen of the 1950’s. In 1974 he established what is officially known today as The Sonny Evans Small Craft Harbour at Shelly Beach, South Coast.

This is an account of the ups and downs, trials and triumphs of a hard-working, hard-drinking man with a wicked sense of humour, whose favourite saying was: ‘A stranger’s just a friend you do not know’ “

As the year 1999 rolled into 2000, there was a request/article published looking for nominations for persons who had made a difference during the last century. So, I thought, in his own small way, my Dad, Sonny Evans, had actually made a difference. Unfortunately, I mislaid the article. I then got to thinking that I would document my Dad's achievements for the grandchildren to read about in later years. But, because a documentary would have been a bit boring, I decided to weave the achievements around his life story. Somehow, my own story got woven in, as well… and, that resulted in The Sonny Side of Life.' Hazel Lodetti

Written in simple language, this story describes the people and the land that defined the person he became, within the political context of his lifetime. The inclusion of peripheral incidents lends verisimilitude, and adds to the reader’s enjoyment of the story.’

[JDPUB: 84] Re: [Fwd: FW: Editing]

I would like to apologise for the email that I sent by mistake to the list.
It was a draft copy of an email that I was in the process of composing for a specific author, and I meant to send it to an email address which is very similar to the list address.
All the best
John
