[JDPUB: 163] new book: MSOMI AND ME by Brian Connell

JUST DONE PRODUCTIONS has published

MSOMI AND ME by Brian Connell R180 (2nd edition)

A passion for Africa, its people and its wildlife led me to place where I made a home and lived a life that few could imagine. A place whose stories are told in this book about the trials, tribulations, excitement and heartbreak that remains close to my heart.
It’s about a place of peace.
- Brian Connell

“A fascinating and moving read, brimful of memorable anecdotes, with insight, wisdom, humour, and bursting with knowledge about Africa.”

“It's also much more than the story of the creation of Nokuthula - the Place of Peace - ostensibly a wilderness bush-camp where the author aimed to run photographic workshops. What comes across so powerfully is Brian Connell's indivisible bond with Africa in all its complexities - land, wildlife and people.”

“It's a story of friendship and love, loss and sadness, written with a conviction and passion that shines out of the pages. And it's the story of the meeting of minds and souls - Brian Connell's and Msomi's, but also that of the young ranger, Robert, to accomplish between them something rich and very special. A marvellous book.”

[JDPUB: 162] new book: TROUBLED WATERS by SIMON NORVAL

JUST DONE PRODUCTIONS has published

TROUBLED WATERS by Simon Norval R160

This story is the sequel to Simon Norval’s most recent novel, Decoding the Past; one which describes the current-day discovery of a Second World War German U-boat off Cape Agulhas.

In Troubled Waters, the central characters from the last book travel to Namibia on a diving trip, but they also attempt to validate claims made by a Windhoek local that his uncle had served in the Type VIIC class submarine, U-452 – one which had allegedly been carrying gold bullion of the Third Reich during the dying days of the last war.

With only their Land Rover 4x4, their boat and diving gear and a few key contacts in the region, Petrus Basson and ‘Tiny’ Bruwer set out from Bredasdorp in the Southern Cape to the Namibian capital and then Swakopmund to determine if the claim is simply that of a ranting maverick, or whether there lies an element of truth in his assertions.

Within days of their arrival, the two men are caught up in an intricate web of intrigue, deception and greed which threatens not only their own lives but those of their most trusted companions.

[JDPUB: 161] NEW BOOK: DECODING THE PAST by SIMON NORVAL

JUST DONE PRODUCTIONS has published

DECODING THE PAST by Simon Norval R160

Seventy years after the Second World War, a South African naval frigate discovers a sunken German U-boat off Cape Agulhas – the southern tip of Africa.

Many aspects of the war effort on both sides are re-opened and spur frantic attempts by certain locals to conceal secrets held onboard the lost submarine. What damning evidence do they hold for them?

A German Navy task group arrives in the bay to seal off the submarine and find that the boat’s Enigma cipher machine and its ‘Top Secret’ code book have been removed. For the German government – and, potentially, others – their recovery becomes one of national importance and an eminent retired professor of history accompanying the group sets about to track down the culprits and the elusive codes.

In the process, the venerable academic discovers more about certain of the local inhabitants and his own past than he could ever have imagined.

[JDPUB: 160] NEW BOOK: FROM KITCHEN TO COCKPIT by Yvonne van den Dool

Just Done Productions announces the publication of:

From Kitchen to Cockpit: A Woman's Journey through the World of Aviation by Yvonne van den Dool R200

“A sincere, colourful account of the ongoing challenges that faced a young South African woman whose dream it was to fly – a woman, whose fierce determination and love of flying, combined with integrity, excellence and a keen sense of humour, has influenced women in aviation, both in South Africa and abroad.

Yvonne van den Dool paints a rich picture of the scenario of women aviators around the world from the 1950's through to the 1980's, highlighting their incredible achievements. Within this broader context of women in aviation, Yvonne shares the story of her life as South Africa's first woman to hold a Senior Commercial Pilot's Licence. With a strong, fearless spirit, Yvonne embarked on a journey that would not only lead her to fly Tiger Moths at tree-top level whilst spraying Tsetse flies at Kariba Dam, establish altitude records, represent South Africa in Washington DC as their first Governor of the Ninety-Nines and navigate the treacherous Basutoland Mountains, but also become a great role-model and mentor to her two daughters and three grand-daughters.

In 2010 Yvonne celebrated her 80th birthday by exploring the Silk Route in North Western China – an example of how she has lived life to the full. She lives in Hermanus, South Africa, where she continues to nurture her interest in physics, nature and life itself.”

“Overcoming sexism and prejudice, not to mention male-dominated officialdom along the way, this remarkable lady tells her story in a delightfully bright and interesting manner, describing her triumphs and disappointments, both in aviation and domestically, without rancour or self-aggrandisement, although in this reviewer's opinion she has reason for both….

Fascinating throughout and very hard to put down once you have started to read it, the author's life story is a true inspirational account of the triumph of the human spirit over any adversity encountered along life's journey, and a must-read for all who aspire to being positive in life, no matter what the latter throws at you.
Very highly recommended.”

[JDPUB: 158] NEW BOOK: SWA/NAMIBIAN BORDER WAR - Major Military and Political Incidents 1959-1989

Just Done Productions have published
SWA/ Namibian Border War
Major Political and Military Incidents 1959-1989 by Wikus van Rensburg

THE WAR THAT SHAPED THE FACE OF SOUTHERN AFRICA
<![if !vml]><![endif]>A decorated career soldier who simultaneously pursued academic aspirations, Lt Col (Prof) J. L. ‘Wikus’ Jansen van Rensburg is today Associate Professor in the Faculty of Military Science at Stellenbosch University.
His first decade in the South African Defence Force was consumed by the pivotal second half of the Border War/Armed Liberation Struggle for Namibia that irrevocably changed the lives of all involved while shaping the region’s geo-political evolution.

Aiming to establish a broad orientation of what was viewed from radically polarised perspectives; this book is a balanced, diarised representation of that conflict, from its origins in the pre-German era up to and including Namibia’s independence. The comprehensive scope of the author’s research is evinced by the over 1 000 references to reputable sources representing both sides of the struggle.

These long-awaited annals of a defining period in Southern Africa are a most valuable addition to the lexicon of military history.
