Starting OverBrian Locker     456 pages     R160

1977 – Johannesburg, South Africa

Mark Calder is 33 years old, stressed out, unfit, and overweight.

After the loss of his business, subsequent divorce, and family, he slips into a state of depression that results in six-month binge of booze and bar brawls.

Then one morning, having woken up in his car, halfway to Durban, and no recollection as to how he got there, he decides to seek new horizons in a bid to try to forget and put his old life behind him.

Having heard of a Special Forces Unit called Spikes (acronym for Special Bike Squad), especially formed to operate along and beyond South Africa’s borders, Mark decides that it might just be the answer to what he is seeking.

The story follows Mark through the rigorous Selection Course and training to become an operator. Among a host of characters we meet the enigmatic Pete Baker, Peet Fourie, not to mention Denise Lynton-Smythe, a journalist who disguises herself as a man and manages to infiltrate the unit to get a story. There’s Banger Lawson, a soldier of fortune, who has crossed from the Rhodesian SAS, and Angelo and Dodger, both seasoned ex-mercenaries.

This is not a story for the faint-hearted. Neither is it a story about the Bush War, although one or two operations are covered, and the heartache suffered by the operatives at a loss of a friend.

This story is more about the rigorous selection phase and the training it takes to turn a person into a well-oiled fighting machine. It is a story of torturous physical and mental conditioning; the pain of blood, sweat and tears, and finally, the feeling of well-being and quiet confidence that comes when a candidate becomes accepted as an operator.

Brian Locker was born into a middle-class working family in Johannesburg in 1944. Educated in Johannesburg, he spent a better part of his life there working in various sectors of the Printing Industry. Twice married, he has two children and four grandchildren from his first marriage, and now lives in Pretoria with his second wife, Wilma.

He has packed quite a bit of adventure into his sixty-two years, having backpacked down the Wild Coast, mined semi-precious stones in Zimbabwe, had a stint with South African Special Forces, lived on a sanctuary where he counseled the homeless and substance abusers, and many more.

Today he operates an Internet book buying and selling enterprise.

Starting Over is his first novel, and part one of a trilogy. The second in the Trilogy titled Home At Last deals with Mark Calder's turbulent return to civilian life and the third SEBOTHELO – A Place of Rest.
