[JDPUB: 104] NEW BOOK: PLUMERS MEN by ROBERT BURRETT

Plumers Men by Robert Burrett has just been published by Just Done Productions Publishing R180

During the early phases of the Anglo-South African War, 1899-1900, members of the Rhodesia Regiment under the Command of Lieutenant-Colonel H.C.O. Plumer, saw action in Southern Rhodesia (Zimbabwe) and along the eastern border of the Bechuanaland Protectorate (Botswana). They were instrumental in holding back substantial numbers of Boer forces which otherwise might have fought on the Natal and Cape Fronts. They were also in on the “Relief of Mafeking”. Yet this force and its actions have largely been forgotten.

This book investigates the Rhodesia Regiment and seeks to correct some previous errors that have been published. A central theme is the current relocation of their otherwise forgotten battles and graves at Fort Tuli, Rhodes’ Drift, Mochudi, Gaborone, Lobatse and Ramathlabama. There is also mention of the role of the Rhodesian Field Force (consisting of Australian and New Zealand “Bushmen”, as well as members of the Imperial Yeomanry) and the often forgotten African participants; Kgosi Khama’s BaMangwato and Kgosi Linchwe’s BaKgatla.

Robert S Burrett was born in Bulawayo and was educated in Zimbabwe and South Africa. A trained archaeologist, he worked for many years as a school teacher at various private institutions in Zimbabwe. More recently he has thrown away the chalk and has gone back to his real interests in life – archaeology, history, social anthropology and botany. He has published widely on these subjects and is struggling to complete a doctoral thesis as he finds too many other interesting projects. Currently Robert is involved in creating several small site museums for clients in Botswana, South Africa, Zambia and Zimbabwe. These cover both his interest in historical archaeology as well as natural history. He is an Associate Researcher with the National Museums & Monuments of Zimbabwe.
