The poetry in this volume compels you to join the author in a ride through her thoughts and feelings on love, relationships, and life. About the Author
Astrid was born in Zimbabwe and currently resides in Cape Town, She is both a practicing artist and poet. She attended a number of schools in Zimbabwe, England and South Africa which added a different dimension to her education. She studied Art at Michaelis, Ruth Prowse and under private tuition. Astrid works in oil and mixed media on canvas and actively participates in a local poetry and writing group.
During her childhood she travelled extensively as her father was a pilot and her mother a travel agent. In later life she travelled to the Orient and India, where she spent a year living in the foothills of the Himalayas. She has travelled to India 14 times since 1979. Most recently Astrid has travelled to Ireland, where she has spent time visiting monastic sites and Neolithic ruins and gaining inspiration for her creative expression.
She continues to write and is currently working on a novel.

This book has been written at a time when the South African government has through its much vaunted, and often controversial ‘arms package’, acquired for the use of its Navy, new frigates, maritime helicopters and conventional submarines.
The South African Navy itself is currently undergoing a metamorphosis from that of a ‘small ship’ Navy to that of one with a potential of becoming a larger, regional and continental maritime force. On this basis, it provides the capability of ‘out of area’ operations with extensive liaison and collaboration with other African nations and their Navies. Not that of romantic ‘blue water’ stuff, but acting rather as an instrument of the nation’s foreign policy in terms of providing monitoring, peacekeeping and, if necessary, intervention within the context of coastal, littoral and riverine operations.
As the economic powerhouse of the region, and in fact, Africa itself, South Africa also dominates regional and African politics through the catalyst provided by SADC and the fledgling African Parliament. Its responsibility, therefore, extends not only over its own expansive Economic Exclusion Zone (EEZ) of some two million square nautical miles, but also, as Africa’s ‘senior partner’, within the seaward territorial limits of other African maritime nations.
Whereas South Africa remains, after its democratic transformation process, essentially stable and prosperous, Africa itself remains in turmoil, with civil wars, sporadic inter-tribal genocide, coups d’état, civil unrest and insurgency commonplace.
This novel attempts to sketch possible or even likely scenario’s within which the South African Navy could operate. To this end, I have, as far as possible, devised scenarios and events that could be considered credible within the African littoral context.
Although the core of this book is that of ‘naval stuff’, the relationship to the service and its government and other governments are played out through the medium of largely fictitious persons and entirely fictitious situations.
The plot develops from an essentially naval perspective and attempts to demystify a typical regional maritime conflict for the layman. It was therefore inevitable that an abundance of ‘naval jargon’ would have to be used, in keeping with that used by the Navy. Without this, the plot would have been devoid of plausibility and thus meaningless.
The novel similarly attempts to tap into the typical psyche of naval personnel, from the highest echelons of command down to the younger sailors as well as those people whose lives are directly or otherwise affected by the activities and ways of the Navy.
The capabilities and limitations of all naval ships, specifically those of the frigates and submarines, are described in general terms only.The associated analysis of frigate system performance, made throughout the book, are typical attributes associated with, and encountered by, all naval systems and do not specifically reflect on SA Navy system characteristics.
The characteristics and attributes of all combat platforms (in ships and aircraft alike) and their weapons fits, are based entirely on information available in the open literature and to be found in unclassified ‘glossies’. Such systems have also been deliberately defined in general terms so as not to compromise actual capabilities. Any deviations from actual characteristics have also been at my discretion.
The actual classes and names of South African warships, support vessels and helicopters have been used to add realism to the plot. As the second Class-209 submarine (S102) had not been named at the time of publication, I have given her a ‘temporary’ and hopefully appropriate name.
The names of all personnel used in this book, with notable exceptions, are entirely fictitious. The extent to which actual names of organisations and places have been retained or changed has been entirely at my discretion.
Despite the criticality in terms of the fighting Navy’s roles in protecting sovereign maritime territorial limits and thereby ensuring uninhibited maritime trade, South Africans, indeed most Africans, remain generally indifferent to roles played in this regard. Hopefully, this story will at the very least instil a better recognition and empathy for the protectors of the high seas, if not their begrudging admiration.

“This book is about my experiences at Sisters Incorporated, a home for abused women and their children and pregnant women. I was a housemother there for eighteen months and taught painting classes once a week for two years and three months.
The stories are fictionally written, but they are similar to the events and circumstances that women find themselves in. Some are true stories and events that have occurred at the home.
Many women find themselves suddenly homeless, helpless and they don’t know where to turn to. I wrote this book to raise an awareness of the plight of these women, and also so that women who are in abusive situations will be aware that there is help out there for them.
They arrive at the safe house afraid, shattered, abused, insecure and needing safety, security, and nurturing - Emotionally, verbally and physically abused, with low self-esteem. They have very bravely made a start by deciding to leave their abusive situation. They often have to leave behind their precious possessions, their clothing, furniture, and arrive only with the clothes on their backs.
They are only with us for a few months. Many struggle to get jobs and find a small place to live when they leave here. Accommodation is extremely expensive, and then there is food and schooling and electricity, petrol and other payments to consider. The reality is that most fathers don’t provide maintenance and the court cases are endless. These women desperately need low cost housing, subsidized education and medical aid for their children.”

This is a story of love; an honest tale of ordinary people trying to make a difference in one boy's life. A story about a severely abused 4 year old boy who touched the lives of his foster family in their brief time together. It is written by a South African foster parent. This book captivates the reader and takes you through the frustrations, hurdles, victories and despair suffered by DJ, his mother and foster family. DJ'S phobias and countless other problems are outlined and Dean conveys the manner in which he and his wife dealt with them. "DJ was totally incontinent. He wet his bed. Would or could not speak except in one word sentences. He had the brain capacity of an 18 month old, even though he was already 4 years old. He would not play with other children. These were just some of the little things that had actually led to the foster mother's decision to rather have the child placed in an institution." What is remarkable is that in the short time that he spent with this foster family, he became a different child. He was able to respond to love, he could talk and he overcame many of his problems. People who saw him, could not believe that this was the same child. DJ came into the Robert's care as a "damaged" child, labeled as being retarded. Simple love and care made a miraculous change in this little boy's life. The tragedy came when he had to leave them.
Dean and Marlene Roberts have cared for more than 13 foster children over the years, all with their own unique set of problems. DJ was the first.
