Press Release: The Corrupt Affair by Jim Parker

Just Done Productions would like to announce the publication of a new book, The Corrupt Affair by J.W. Parker

The Corrupt Affair has close links with South Africa's most infamous arms deal. During the National Unity period of 1994 to 1999, there was intense competition to sell warships and fighter aircraft to South Africa. The eventual outcome was the purchase of German-built corvette cruisers and British and Swedish fighter trainer aircraft.

The rumours of corrupt deals have never gone away. Since there is no international threat to South Africa's borders, why were these ships and planes required? Widespread corruption was reported in the media as several top names were found guilty of accepting bribes. A generally corrupt relationship” became a catch-phrase to describe such activities.

The Corrupt Affair uses this inviting background to show corruption's pervasive influence in an emerging democracy.

“The sticky-fingered official is the enduring caricature of those in African high places. The most graphic modern example is the South African arms deal scandal that seems set to run for ever.

It is amidst such intrigue and corruption that Henry Piggott finds himself as an uncompromising Johannesburg journalist. The unattached English idealist acquires a renowned socialite as his mistress, plus influential friends within the political, diplomatic and business cauldron of post-Apartheid South Africa. The ex-Umkhonto we Sizwe spymaster, Reggie Isaacs, is among the exiles returning to take up ministerial appointments. His friendship with Henry becomes a moral crusade against endemic government corruption and syndicated global crime.

Henry’s trail lures him into a grey world where success is pursued at any cost. Pretoria’s military and armaments industry junta spawns a ruthless international struggle that eventually promotes a hideous fallout which threatens to collapse all post-Apartheid progress. ‘Information whose release would cause grave damage to the nation’ becomes a standard condition for those operating on behalf of South Africa, Israel, France, Germany, the United States and Britain

The Corrupt Affair is a compelling “factional fiction” with a frightening credibility when placed alongside today’s South African political uncertainties. It is written with the insight of an ex-diplomat serving in Pretoria when today’s arms deal machinations began.”

About the author

If The Corrupt Affair was simply a non-fictional account, Jim Parker would be well-placed to give it an authentic flavour.  He was the British Defence advisor in Pretoria as the ‘ships and planes’ saga took root. He left the diplomatic and military life in the mid-nineties to live on a farm in KwaZulu-Natal.  The Parkers ran a successful tourism business before moving to a cane farm in Zululand.

As well as writing, he is now converting his farm from cane to essential oils.

Press Release: The Pink Prison by Mandy van Oudtshoorn

Just Done Productions – Publishing have just published The Pink Prison by Mandy van Oudtshoorn. This book is based on the author’s boarding school diaries. This book reflects what life was like for a white teenage girl in the 1980s - the fashion, movies, music and TV programmes (‘Pop Shop’ and ‘Magnum PI’ to name a few) and the issues confronted by teenagers from sex to religion.

The Pink Prison - Mandy van OudtshoornThe year is 1984 and Molly van Oudheusden, a thirteen year old girl is being sent from an apple farm in Elgin to a boarding school in Stellenbosch for the first time. She has decided to write a diary to her long lost cat Waffles. Molly has many hilarious experiences throughout the year, which all form part of growing up.

Her sister, Crystal, has been in the boarding school (Pink Prison) for two years already and helps make the transition from small village school to big town school a bit easier. Throughout the year Molly discovers boys and that life can be extremely complicated. She has her first real kiss and falls in love for the first time.

Her hostel and school friends all bring their unique characters to this book. She and her friends get into all types of mischief in the hostel. She goes through initiation, and ghost night which all form part of the school’s tradition. She is convinced that the ‘matrics’ poisoned her during initiation, which is causing her to develop anorexia. Molly is totally overwhelmed by the 40 plus rules that are strictly enforced at the ‘Pink Prison’. The Pink Prison is run by Mrs Wickermeyer who won’t deviate from the hostel rules, and quite frankly doesn’t seem to like children much. Her side kick is an ancient old bat called Miss Mauser. She is always trying to convince the girls to come to her bible study evenings in her room, which smells very funny. During the year Molly attends a confirmation camp and has a failed attempt at speaking in tongues. She manages to get through the first year of high school by the skin of her teeth.

She and her friend Brooke, re-visit their old school in Grabouw during the local sports day. It is a typical farming community sports day with an exercise demonstration and lots of koeksusters. She goes on holiday with her family to the sea resort of Arniston, where they arrive to find the house they are renting is only half built. The book starts on 1 January 1984 where Molly and her family are camping in Kleinmond and ends on 31 December 1984 in the Strand where she and her family are celebrating New Years Eve.

Press Release - Farewell the Tithe! Welcome the Better Promise! by Mark McDonogh

Farewell the Tithe! Welcome the Better Promise has just been published by Just Done Productions Publishing.

The author, Mark McDonogh, has the following to say:

Farewell the Tithe! Welcome the Better Promise! by Mark McDonoghMany books have been written and thousands of sermons preached on the validity and necessity of “tithing” in many groupings and denominations of the Christian Church. Few words, in comparison, have been penned to explain why “tithing” should not be taught in its present form.

The aim of this study is do precisely that - to reveal that there are, indeed, better promises given to us from God and how we should go about the sharing of our resources.

This study has as its goal, to help release believers into dimensions of liberated giving that go beyond the tithe. Giving, that is free of compulsion; free of manipulation; giving performed without guilt or fear; giving, that can be more or less than the tithe, without anxiety that God is about to be robbed. Giving, that reflects the heart of God, as a faith response to His promises.

To achieve the end of discovering and understanding that there are better promises available to the Church than the doctrine of tithing, proof needs to be forthcoming that this is a fact. That proof has to come from the word of God. It is this word that remains the source of truth. It is therefore necessary to explain in detail why “tithing,” as is presently taught, is not the way that God desires us to respond. Because many arguments and absolute statements have been made about “Tithing” over the last few centuries of Church life, it is necessary that a study is made of these arguments and credible deductions made, so as to base our on-going spiritual walk on sound foundation. The necessity therefore exists, that the arguments in favour of tithing have to be analyzed and dismantled in order to pave the way for discovering the better promises available to all.

______________________________________________________________________

The subject explored in this book has always been controversial. But the writer here has given us a different view of our giving to God, which many have tried to regulate. Although we have been freed by grace there always seems to be a tendency to find a law to govern our Christian way of life. In doing this we find it difficult to surrender ourselves and our giving freely, in response to our God’s amazing grace.

Mark has explored and given us much to advance our thinking and doing, by expressing what he has prayerfully understood in the area of our giving. This subject has been with him for a long time, and he has done well for us to be given the opportunity of a different look at tithing and giving to our Lord.

This book will make you think, and might change your giving to our Lord in respect to His grace.

Rev. Brian Verwey

Press Release: A Reflection of my Past by Lindi Baird

Just Done Productions - Publishing would like to announce the publication of A Reflection of my Past - The life story of John Baird, the First Landdrost of Beaufort West 1796 – 1845.

The author, Lindi Baird has the following to say:

Reflections of my PastThe name of the Scottish Bairds is woven into the early history of South Africa. The Baird surname has strong ties to the Battle of Blaauwberg, to the opening of the interior in the Great Karoo and personal ties with Lord Charles Somerset. Courage, arrogance, deep trusting friendships and mystery add enigma and spice to this family’s rich history in South Africa!
The Baird story involves a British nobleman who was hailed as one of Scotland’s finest soldiers. Another who was appointed as the Commandant of the Navy Intelligence in Simon’s Town and a cousin who became the First Landdrost in the interior region and a grandson, who might have been the first explorer to discover a ‘fossil’ in the Great Karoo.
For many years our hero’s history remained a myth in South Africa, with endless dead-ends and very little information to research. I, myself became an adventurer, an explorer who set sail to unravel the mysteries of his past.
This manuscript is a tribute to a wonderful man - my great grandfather, four generations ago - to the life of John Baird, a Baird forefather and the First Landdrost of Beaufort West. These pages will take you, the reader, back in time. His life at the Southern tip of Africa will be relived as you experience his adventures and travels during his 39 years stay in the Cape Colony.
John Baird was an honorable man, a man who saw the best in people.

This is his story.

A Reflection of my Past is available from Just Done at R130.

Press Release - INSIDE OUT

Inside-Out: South African Fashion Designers Sewing Success has been published by Just Done Productions – Publishing.

This book explores the relatively uncharted but growing fashion sector and the contribution of indigenous designers to South Africa’s clothing and textile sector.

The author investigates the experiences of and problems faced by local designers in producing garments with a uniquely home-grown signature, meeting consumer demand in terms of price and volume, and being competitive in the current context of the global and local market. Despite enormous challenges, numerous South African designers are achieving success in different ways and in so doing, have established viable business operations through perseverance and creativity in a highly competitive environment.

The research into this subject offers a comprehensive view and assessment of two large and important fashion events in South Africa – the Durban Fashion Week and the Durban Designer Collection. This study, along with the views expressed by the participant designers, articulates a profound need for more – rather than fewer - fashion events, and argues for greater collaboration and mobilisation around this area of enterprise. In so doing, the findings deepen the debate prevailing in the industry as to the significance of the role played by designers and the ways in which a broader spectrum of marketing platforms could strengthen the economic growth of this sector.

The author presents a tableau of an apparently fragmented realm of business, characterised by the tension between individuals’ ambition for status and the collective imperative for sustainable solutions, in an industry under threat from cheap imports and the obstacles posed by a globalised economy.

Inside–Out is a valuable resource for academics, business practitioners, development specialists, marketing and media analysts and policy-makers with an interest in fashion design and the wider context of clothing and textile manufacture and beneficiation.

The study is an interesting read, and the story Palmi tells resembles what many people and firms across the globe, today and in the past, have experienced. The China-link in my opinion is interesting.”

Professor Patrik Aspers, Stockholm University.

An informative and an interesting read in terms of the current state that the industry is in.”

Gavin Rajah – South African Fashion Designer

Renato Palmi has a MA in Development Studies from the University of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, diplomas in marketing and production management, and has many years’ experience in commerce and NGO work. He lectures on Fair Trade and ethical approaches for consumer consciousness within the context of the global and local clothing industries, as well as on fashion marketing and brand creation.
